Aurora, Colorado: The Gateway to the Rockies

Aurora, CO is considered by some to be a suburb of nearby Denver, but Aurora is a separate Home Rule Municipality with over 300,000 residents. It straddles three counties, Arapahoe, Adams, and Douglas, with the majority of the city's 142.5 square miles falling in Arapahoe County.

Early in Colorado's history a real estate tycoon named Donald Fletcher founded a town named after himself in the plains east of Denver. He didn't last long in Fletcher, and neither did his name. Eight years later he was long gone and the town was renamed Aurora, which is Latin for "dawn". Aurora, Colorado was a small town until the Cold War, when military installations started popping up all over and bringing with them personnel and business.

Though most of the smaller installations were decommissioned at the end of the Cold War, Aurora CO's strong tradition of military involvement has lasted to this day. Buckley Air Force Base, home of 460 Space Wing has undergone recent expansion and will take on further responsibility for missile detection and global surveillance.

Aurora, CO's primary educational institution is the Anshutz Medical Campus of the University of Colorado at Denver. It contains the University of Colorado hospital and the Colorado Bioscience Park. The medical campus, like a lot of Aurora's infrastructure, was once owned by the military. As Fitzsimons Army Medical Center, it served as recovery hospital to President Dwight Eisenhower after his heart attack in 1955 and as the birthplace of 2004 Presidential Candidate John Kerry.

Aurora, Colorado has a history of promoting the development of athletes and citizens' involvement with sports and personal fitness. Several well-known sports stars come from Aurora, including Aaron Moorehead of the Indianapolis Colts and Eddie Gill of the Indiana Pacers. As a result, it was named "Sportstown" for Colorado in the 50th anniversary edition of Sports Illustrated magazine.

Public transport in Aurora, CO is a combination of light regional rail and bus service, with a planned extension of the Denver commuter rail service to link Denver, Aurora, and the Denver International Airport. However, most residents prefer to own a vehicle to meet their transportation needs.

Which Neighborhood Is For Me?

Aurora, Colorado doesn't have much of an established presence of big business or financial institutions. It's a largely suburban community, which means the available real estate falls primarily into the residential and combined residential/commercial categories.

The most common type of neighborhood is the planned subdivision. Most of these contain a variety of single-family home sizes and styles and feature neighborhood events, programs, support groups, amenities and home-care by-laws. They are designed primarily for families which own at least one vehicle. A good example of this type of neighborhood is the Dam West subdivision, which has been ranked as one of three outstanding communities in the United States by the Urban Land Institute.

Aurora, CO is the home of several current and former military installations which are considered neighborhoods within the city. Buckley Air Force base has dormitories and family housing units for base personnel only. The old Lowry Air Force base, however, was decommissioned in 1991 and large parts of it were sold off for real estate development and civilian housing.

Another unique neighborhood to consider is Stapleton. From 1929 to 1995 Stapleton International was Denver's primary airport. After it was replaced by Denver International Airport, it was decommissioned and redesigned as a pedestrian-oriented subdivision with public parks, shopping centers, and four schools, making it Aurora's largest neighborhood. Construction began in 2000 and is currently ongoing.
