A Brief History of Aurora CO

In 1891, Donald Fletcher founded the town of Fletcher out on the plains that were east of Denver. The town was renamed in 1907 to Aurora (Latin for dawn), and remained a fairly small community after the second World War. Postwar suburban development later transformed the town into what has become the fastest growing city in the United States between the late 1970s and the early 1980s.

Although Aurora has been considered as one of Denver's larger suburbs, its growing population in recent decades has lead to efforts for co-equal recognition with Denver. A former mayor once emphasized a notion that eventually would be called the "Aurora/Denver Metropolitan Area." However, such efforts are somewhat hampered by the lack of a large, historically important central business district in the city, which is largely suburban in character.
